Pelican Nebula

Pelican Nebula

The Pelican Nebula (designated as IC 5070 and IC 5067) is a large HII region (low-density cloud of partially ionized gas) in the constellation Cygnus. The common name for this nebula is based on its resemblance to a pelican (rotate the image 90-degree counter-clockwise).

This image is a composite of 30 hours of individual 20-minute images taken over many nights using my Takahasi FSQ106 telescope and a specialized camera (cooled CCD) and 3-nanometer hydrogen-alpha, oxygen-III, and sulfur-II filters.  These separate images are processed, combined and exported using specialized image processing software (PixInsight).

The Veil Nebula, in the constellation Cygnus, is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust.  This image is a composite of several nights of collecting individual Hydrogen Alpha, Oxygen III, and Sulfur II images and then combining them to form this color image.

An HII region is a massive, low-density cloud of partially ionized atomic hydrogen. The common name for this nebula is based on its resemblance to a pelican.

This image is a composite of numerous individual images taken over many nights using my Takahasi FSQ106 reflector telescope and a specialized camera (cooled CCD) and 3-nanometer hydrogen-alpha filter.

The Cygnus Loop - SH2-103

The Cygnus Loop - SH2-103

Sharpless 103 is a large supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus.  Represents 10 nights of image collection at the telescope and a few hours of image processing work at the computer.

This is a composite of 88 images taken through narrowband filters, wavelengths around the emission lines of hydrogen (H-a, 656 nm), oxygen (OIII, 501 nm), sulfur (SII, 672nm).

​One of my favorite deep space objects. It lies about 5,000 light years from Earth. You are seeing sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in the wind-blown nebula ejected from the star when it became a red giant.

Named after a classic arcade video game -- the PacMan Nebula (NGC 281) is an HII region in the constellation of Cassiopeia. An HII region is a massive, low-density cloud of partially ionized gases.  It was discovered back in 1883.

This image is a composite of numerous individual images taken over many nights using my Takahasi FSQ106 reflector telescope and a specialized camera (cooled CCD) and three different narrowband filters ( 3-nanometer hydrogen-alpha filter, 3-nanometer doubly ionized oxygen filter, and 3-nanometer ionized sulfur filter.
